Title:Lagoftalmos bilateral en paciente con lepra lepromatosa. Caso clínico Bilateral lagophthalmos inlepromatous leprosy. Case report-
Source:s.l; s.n; 2002. 4 p. ilus.
Abstract:CASE REPORT: A case of bilateral facial palsy with paralytic ectropion, lagophthalmos and corneal damage secondary to corneal exposure in a long-standing patient with lepromatous leprosy is presented. Correction of paralytic ectropion was performed by medial cantoplasty, tarsal strip and Medpor lower eyelid spacer implantation. Lagophthalmos was corrected by gold weight implant in the upper tarsus. DISCUSSION: Ocular findings in leprosy appear in 72 per cent of patients. Facial nerve palsy occurs in 3-19.8 per cent, being bilateral in 5 per cent. In long standing cases with corneal complications secondary to exposure, surgical treatment is required. (AU).

Source:s.l; s.n; jun. 1974. 14 p. ilus.
Abstract:Ocular complications in patients with facial paralysis may be minimal or they may be severe enough to seriously handicap a patient. This discussion is concerned primarily with solutions to eye problems resulting from facial paralysis.(AU).

Title:Ocular leprosy in the Canal Zone ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; Jan.-Mar. 1977. 5 p. ilus, tab.
Abstract:The results of a two year survey of eye problems among the patients at the Palo Seco Hospital in the Canal Zone are presented. Only two patients, one classified as having lepromatous leprosy and the other as having the tuberculoid form of the disease, failed to exhibit ocular complications. The high prevalence of leprotic ocular disease (96%) is most probably due to the advanced age of the patients, the lengthy duration of their illness, and the high percentage of patients afflicted by the lepromatous form of the disease.(AU).

Title:Surgical treatment of facial nerve involvement caused by leprosy ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; may 1976. 4 p. ilus.
Abstract:Complete and partial nerve paralysis can result from leprosy. The latter is more prevalent and results in lagophthalmos and corneal hypoesthesia. The former is characterized by loss of facial expression, deviation of the face to the nonparalyzed side, difficulty in chewing, and drooling, in addition to lagophthalmos and corneal hypoesthesia. Affected patients are at risk to develop blindness, as well as suffering social and economic deprivation because of the effects of facial nerve paralysis. Prevention of blindness and amelioration of the latter were successfully achieved by muscle transfer procedures, temporalis transfer to the eyelid, and masseter transfer to the mouth and nasolabial fold in small, minimally equipped hospitals in Africa.(AU).

Title:A survey on eye involvement among leprosy patients in The Netherlands ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; December 15, 1983. 8 p. ilus, tab.
Abstract:A survey of 121 leprosy patients in the Netherlands showed eye involvement in 20% of the patients, rising to 27% if madarosis and the adnexae are included. Iris atrophy was the main lesion encountered in BL and LL patients. One typical lepromatous fundus lesion was seen. No bilateral blindness occurred. Two eyes had a visual acuity of 3/60 due to intractable scleritis and acute iritis in LL with ENL. Seven eyes of 5 patients had a visual acuity of 0.2 to 3/60, mainly due to iris atrophy in lepromatous leprosy. Prevalence of blindness in our series was low as compared with the literature.(AU).
